PERSEVERE
James 1:2-4---My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Testing – “That by
which something is tried and proven.” According to this passage, trials test
(or prove) faith. And faith develops perseverance, which is necessary if we are
going to be spiritually mature. Most believers would likely agree with this truth.
But, what about the joy? How many of us consider it pure joy to face trials?
The problem for many of us isn’t a lack of knowledge. The problem is a divided
heart. In order to find joy in the midst of trials, Christ and His glory must
be the object of our heart’s affection. In every situation, our goal must be to
know Him more and to reflect His character. Only when this is true can we have
joy when our faith is being tested. Perseverance is not easy. Just ask any
long-distance runner. It hurts to keep running when everything in you longs to
stop. The motivation to continue is the reward. The same is true spiritually.
Considering it joy to face trials does not mean that we enjoy the hardship. God
is not asking us to be happy to have cancer or to lose a job. Jesus was not
happy when He went to the cross…but “for the joy set before Him” He endured
(Hebrews 12:2). The joy comes because our hearts are fixed on Jesus – He is our
reward. And to be mature in Him we must learn to persevere. So, if you are
struggling to have joy when your faith is tested, examine your heart. Where do
your affections lie? Take heart and persevere! The reward is worth the
hardship.

A Perfect Healing
Jeremiah 17:14---Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
You have many
afflictions. You need so very, very much, a perfect healing. You want a perfect
healing for the brokenness of your heart. You want a perfect healing for the
brokenness of your relationships. You want a perfect healing for sicknesses,
illnesses, and diseases you face. You want a perfect healing for yourself and
for others. As you look around your world, a world full of sickness, illness,
disease, and dysfunction, you see no such thing as perfect healing. As you look
at your world, you are tempted to discount as total foolishness the idea any
kind of perfect healing can occur. However, there is perfect healing. There is
perfect healing because the Lord's kingdom is within you and therefore not far
away. In the Lord's kingdom, your heart is always mended, your spirit is always
repaired, and your soul rests in the Lord's eternal love. In every moment of
your life, affirm before Him how you can touch the Lord's perfect healing. In
every moment of your life, you are immersed in the Lord's healing love.

People Have Questions
People have questions about God, and questions about what He does. Some of these questions are hard questions. People ask things like, "Where are the answers when I need answers but no answers can be found?" "Where are the answers when I have cancer and I have to decide whether I want surgery or chemotherapy?" "Where are the answers when I am elderly and I am forced into leaving my home and I have to decide whether I will go to a retirement home or move in with my children?" When we need answers, sometimes it seems God is far away. The Psalmist talked about God when it seems God is far away when the Psalmist wrote in Psalms 22:19 "But you, O Lord, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me." Where is the answer when you have to decide whether to put your parent in a nursing home or try to take care of him or her yourself? Where is the answer when you are a single parent and you have to decide whether to put your child in a daycare center or whether to hire a babysitter you barely know? Where is an answer from God and God's guidance for decisions you have to make when all the choices are bad ones? Part of the answer must rest in trust in the Lord and in trusting our ability to be His humble and contrite child. Part of the answer is in our ability to be willing to do only His will and not our own.

The Comfort That Only God Can Give
2 Corinthians 1:3-5--- Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
Grief rips away at
the heart and can turn a life teeming with meaning into an empty wasteland.
When tears well up in our eyes and grief fills our soul, what are we to do? In
a time of grief, our first instinct should always be to run to God. In God's
arms we find the comfort and warmth of His love. In God's arms, we can find new
meaning and new purpose when the dark days of grief attack us. However, when we
lead lives apart from God in the present or when we think we do not need God in
the present, then when grief comes, God is hard to find. When we share all we
are and share all we have with God when the times are good, He most surely
guides and comforts us when times of grief overwhelm us. When you pour out your
heart and love for God today, no matter what grief might fall into your life
tomorrow, all the love you gave Him comes back one thousand fold when you need
Him the most.

Over Committing Yourself
Luke 10:42---But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Some people would
feel they are living a diminished life if they did not live an over-committed
life. Constantly living like you are putting out "brush fires" is a
lifestyle that can hurt you in a major way. This kind of lifestyle becomes a
dependent/co-dependent lifestyle when over-committing is done from a sense of
weakness or powerlessness. Even when weakness and powerlessness are not issues,
some people lead a "too busy" life. Piling up commitments in our life
to the point where we run ourselves ragged is not helpful to us, to others, and
is not a blessing to God. To healthfully maintain our soul, we are to live in
peace and harmony with God. Over-committing is not a way to live in peace and
harmony with God. Having more things on our agenda than we can possibly do also
takes away from our efficiency because we can easily miss doing what is
important.

Our War In Life
Our war in life is not with the burdens we must bear. Our war in life is with the dark powers that want us to believe we cannot live because of the burdens and obstacles we face each day. The inside of your life is God's domain, His territory, and His kingdom if you give the inside of your life over to Him. It is the inside of your life where the mighty victories of your life are won with His help. You can pray for things to change on the outside of your life. However, God's greatest victory through you is when He and you defeat the influences on the inside of your life…the influences that keep you down, defeated, depressed, and hopeless.

Our Vision Through Hope
Acts 23:6--- But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Paul was on trial before the
Sanhedrin and he was testifying on his own behalf. He was testifying about his
hope when our bodies die, we have a chance to spiritually live forever. Hope is
such a wonderful fuel for the soul. Hope is the fuel enlivening our
imaginations and stirring our hearts. Hope motivates us and gives us visions.
This hope in Christ gives us the courage to risk our life with calm, inspired
hearts and a vision of heaven and eternity. Too many of us look at our life and
see a time when we will die, yet our hope in Christ should give us a vision
into the future of our life which has no end with Christ. Our hope in Christ
gives us a vision of eternal glory with no end. Instead of death, we look
forward to our day of glorious transformation.

Our Victory Is In Jesus
Proverbs 24:26---An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.
We may think we
cannot do many things when we are burdened down and in great pain. We may think
we have no choices. We may think there is no end to our plight. We may think we
cannot deal with things as they are. However, when we are in the deepest
darkness, we must be willing to admit we can be wrong and we must be willing to
admit we can be deceived. When we think we have no choice, we must be honest.
For when we have Christ alive within us, He gives us the power to do many
things we cannot normally do when we are burdened down. When we have Christ in
our life, our pain may not stop, but our victory over the pain can still be
achieved. When we have Christ in our life, we have many more choices than we
think we have if we are honest about how things are and what we have done and
not done. When we have Christ in our life, there is for us a great and
victorious end to our plight. In Christ, there are victories to be won every
minute. In Christ, there are triumphant moments every moment. In Christ, we
have won even when we seem to have been pounded down in utter defeat. In
Christ, the trials and heartaches of this life grow dim as we come to Him
seeking His healing love. In our life, there is more to life than the reality
of our trauma and tragedy. In our life, we have a mountain of Great Power where
we can go and kneel down in prayer. In our life, our mountain of Great Power is
a place called Calvary. On Calvary, a place where Christ suffered more than we
have suffered or will suffer, our victory over every moment of our trauma and
tragedy was won. On Calvary, Christ died to set us free forever.

The Most Dangerous Enemy
Proverbs 27:1---“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
J. L. Ralston said: "Our most dangerous
enemy on this side of the Atlantic is the idea that we have plenty of
time." This is equally true in the matter of preparedness for eternity—as
well as for our country! Because we don’t know when we may lose the use of our
faculties, because we have no lease of our lives, because we don’t know not
when the Lord Jesus will come again, and because the Word commands it, we
should act NOW. After serving the Lord for more than 35 years as a pastor I
suppose the greatest excuse I’ve ever encountered is, “I’ll be saved one day.”
Many I heard who made that statement to me is now absent from their body and
gone. As far as I know one day never came for some of them, they departed this
life without giving their heart to the Lord. Our text says Boast not of
tomorrow, and I’ve said throughout my ministry that tomorrow never comes for
when it gets here it’s today. The Bible says, “In an acceptable time I have
heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the
accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2nd Corinthians 6:2)
Today, Now is the day of salvation, tomorrow will be too late, one day will be
too late. NOW is the Time! Choose This Day Who You Will Serve! Jesus’
Invitation has never changed it is still Come unto Me.

Our Mission
When we fully believe the love of Christ heals all wounds, then our life and our church become an instrument for God and of God. When our life and church become an instrument for God and of God we have a mission for God. Each of us has a part to play in helping people lead better, fuller, more holy, and more devout lives. When we fully believe the gospel, great things start happening. Tragically, we don't have more people in the Christian faith. Even more tragic, we don't each have an individual mission we have accepted from God. In the Southwestern United States, during the region's formative years in the 1800s, a mission was both a building and also a group of missionaries. Can you imagine the impact and excitement a little group of people could have in your city or neighborhood if everyone in the group had the zeal of a missionary? Another definition of the word "mission" is the meaning associated with a course of sermons and services designed to quicken the faith and zeal of Christians or to convert unbelievers. Who gets quickened today? Religious fire and fervor sometimes come out in a church service with a lot of vocalizing of Amen's and hallelujahs. But the fire and fervor of the Christian faith must also come out in what the church does in the world. The evangelical fire that only stays in the church sanctuary does not help the work of God as much as letting the Light of Christ's love burn brightly in the world outside the church walls. Love must be taken to others who are not in church. Our mission should be to let Christ's love burn within us outside the church walls.

Our Greatest Weapon Against Evil
The most important job a communicator of the gospel has is to help the receiver of the communication connect gospel truth to everyday life. In our reality, Satan attacks every person's life. When a person is disconnected from others and disconnected from God, Satan takes advantage of this lack of connection. When people lead disconnected lives, everyday life easily turns into chaos. Connected lives are fruitful lives. Connected persons live life on purpose, for a purpose. Disconnected lives are full of problems. If our heart is connected to Christ, our faith is unshakable. When our connection to Christ via the Holy Spirit is unbreakable, we would forever walk in the glory and grace of his presence. However, our faith is not strong and our connection to Christ is weak. When our faith is weak, our connection to Christ becomes weaker, and we end up in this downward spiral of losing what little faith we possess. For persons who are Christians, Satan tries to attack our connection to God by using adversity, pain, and suffering to weaken our connection to Christ. As Satan attacks, connections begin to fade, and there is backsliding. We must counter-attack Satan with prayer, meditation, humility, and an open heart to Christ's redeeming love. A melted heart kneeling before the Cross is our greatest offense against the evil one.

Hospice Chaplaincy Through The Eyes Of A Retired Hospice Chaplain
Written by, Dr. Danny V. Ray
Several years ago someone asked me, “Preacher what is a
Hospice Chaplain?”
After having the opportunity to serve as a hospice chaplain
for Hospice of Tift Area for seven years and Bethany Hospice for two years, I
learned that hospice care is much more than treating pain, suffering, and
symptoms. If I was looking for words to describe some of the things I learned
there would be words like empathy which is the ability to understand and share
the feelings of another. One of the most important things anyone can ever do
for those who are terminally ill is to reach a place of understanding and
caring. Another word is the word sympathy and one must be careful with this
word. Those who are terminally ill wants you to understand but not to pity
them. With that being said, the greatest gift I believe God has given to me is
the spirit of compassion.
To be compassionate is to be so caring for the sufferings of
others that you are willing to suffer with them. As I study the life of Christ
I see Him as one who had this type of compassion. I believe that is why he had
to go to the mountain places to get away to refuel and strengthen himself for
service. I have called this refilling your bucket. I remember one time feeling
so empty and weak that I went to my Director and told her that I needed a day
to go and refill my bucket. Her reply to me was, “go you know what you need to
do.” I believe one of the greatest illustrations of being compassionate is
given in John’s Gospel chapter eleven verses thirty-two through thirty-five,
where we read the story of Lazarus. (Then when Mary came where Jesus was and
saw him, she fell at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here,
my brother had not died. When Jesus, therefore, saw her weeping, and the Jews
also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus
wept.) Though He appeared to have arrived late He was there providing the
ministry of presence (Being There). Notice what those who saw Him cry said,
“Behold how he loved him!”
Now to answer the question, “What is A Hospice Chaplain?” A
hospice chaplain is one who cares when no one else takes the time to care, to
love those who everyone else has written off because of their lifestyle, to cry
with those who are crying, to hurt with those who are hurting, to just be
present with a listening ear maybe even not having to say one word, just being
there to represent a spiritual presence. I have spent Christmas Eve with
families who were hurting, sitting with them, as they say, goodbye to their
loved ones. I watched as they cried and have cried with them. Being there not
so much because it was my job to be there, but being there because I wanted to
be there with a hurting family. I suppose Theodore Roosevelt said it best,
“Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
I have cared for so many in the nine years that I served as
a hospice chaplain. Being there, representing God, and His spiritual presence too
many who would have never had a relationship with Him if chaplaincy had not been
provided. In the nine years that I served, I made many friends in our service
area. I have stood by the bedside, and at the funeral home and helped with many
funerals to these families. I would dare say I probably preached three hundred
or more funerals for families who allowed me to walk through the deepest of all
dark valleys with them.
I have been out of the full-time hospice chaplaincy for
several years now. I use the term burnout as I felt I needed a break from
seeing so much death and suffering. In the time that I have been away, I have
used hospice services with my mother and have stood by the bedside of our
church members and their families as loved ones died. We live in the land of
the dying and the only hope we have to offer is the hope of Christ. As a
chaplain I never tried to teach people how to die, I always prayed to be able
to teach them how to live. Jesus said in John’s gospel chapter eleven verse
twenty-six, “whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest
thou this?” I believe it.
I may one day soon if God opens the door walk back into
hospice chaplaincy. While I have enjoyed being back in the church and the
pulpit, I must share the truth there is nothing like taking the church into
places it can’t go to represent God’s presence, I love the Hospice Chaplaincy
Ministry as well as the opportunity to serve as a pastor.
Our Encouraging God
What a mighty God we serve!
What a creative Creator we serve!
What a utilitarian God we serve!
Paul is bound in chains but the very
chains that are supposed to keep him quiet and stop a religious revolution are
encouraging others.
Your chains, your difficulties, your
problems, your traumas can be used by God if you let Him.
The burdens you bear can be dedicated
to God.
When you truly turn the chains and
burdens put upon you by Satan into a renewed dedication to serving Christ then
the incredible will happen.

Opening Your Heart
You can think or say the words "Lord Jesus, please come into my heart." However, just because you say these words does not mean that you mean them. Too often, people want Christ in their hearts solely for an emotional benefit for themselves. To have His love in you and to sense His presence you must open the door of your heart. Your reason for opening the door of your heart must not be connected to you and what you need. Your reason for opening the door of your heart must be because you have seen the Savior, that you love Him, and that you are willing to surrender all you have and are to Him.
